Anxiety. It's complicated. It can be a normal part of life. Everyone experiences anxiety at one time or another...public speaking is a common example. Difficult changes can make us feel anxious - a breakup, loss of a job, starting college. In its healthy form, anxiety can warn us of danger, motivate us to complete tasks, or make us want to prepare ourselves to do our best. Using the public speaking example again, being anxious that we might go blank or make a mistake motivates us to spend time to prepare so that we know the material well and so the speech goes well. After the speech is finished, the anxiety goes away.
But I'm guessing the reason you are here is that you've had anxiety that is relentless. It doesn't go away. It interferes with functioning. It can feel crippling at times and keep you from doing the things you want to do. Anxiety can take over your thinking, rob you of joy, lower self-confidence, interfere with relationships, and even make you wonder about your sanity. When anxiety affects you like this, you may need help to get it under control.
I understand anxiety and I know how to help make it more manageable. Together with you, I will help you learn to recognize anxiety in your mind and your body before it gets to a level that causes difficulties. Whether you're dealing with panic attacks, generalized anxiety, worry that won't stop, or another form of anxiety, I can help you learn to manage it, usually without medication. We will work together to develop a set of tools that works for you.
Support for you and building tools that will allow you to manage panic and anxiety is what you can expect in therapy sessions for anxiety. It does not get to have control of your life.
